
The men’s first vets team started their Spring Vets Knockout campaign at the weekend with a trip to Busby in Glasgow’s leafy south side. on a windy Sunday morning the team brushed aside the home team with an emphatic 2 – 0 win with the loss of only 5 games in the two matches.
At first couple Bobby Kerr and Robert Dunbar immediately broke the opponents serve eventually taking the opening set 6 – 1. Both Helensburgh players never looked in trouble as they took the second set with a similar score line 6 – 1.
Hadden Smith and Alastair Hope were in equally good form on court two as they took the opening set 6 – 1. The home side won both their opening service games in the second set but Hadden and Alastair’s powerful groundstrokes proved too much and they took the set 6 – 2.
The team play either Giffnock or Woodend in the next round.
A free helpers training day is being held on Saturday 20 March from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. The club is keen to develop local players to become coaches and this course is the first step that potential coaches should take. Attendees should be 13 years or over and enjoy working with children.
