DUMBARTON stunned league leaders Alloa Athletic with an emphatic victory, ending a run of ten games unbeaten, at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Jim Chapman's side, showing five changes from Saturday, themselves ended a run of four consecutive defeats and collected a well earned three points.
Alloa played good football throughout and showed why they are at the top of the table, but Sons took their chances when it mattered and withstood a late assault to the delight of most of the 552-strong crowd.
The early exchanges were even, but the home side opened the scoring when centre half Ben Gordon rose to head home a fine cross from striker David Winters, playing the last of three games permitted to a trialist.
After the break Alan Maitland's men continued to attack, but the goal came when Scottish Schools internationalist Alan Cook (pictured) hammered home a superb free kick from distance which ex-Sons keeper David Crawford could only help into the net.
A few minutes later visiting centre half Scott Walker brought down Dennis Wyness in the box as he was on the point of shooting. Referee Colin Brown immediately awarded a penalty, but Walker protested too strongly, was shown a yellow card for the second time in the match, and then a red.
Ross Clark converted from the spot to make it 3-0, and although pulled one goal back, Sons completed a memorable triumph.
